How to Choose a Laboratory Fume Hood

Jun 06, 2024

When choosing a laboratory fume hood, you need to consider several factors to ensure that it meets the specific needs and safety of the laboratory. Here are some key considerations and how to choose a fume hood based on these factors:

Experimental content and requirements:
Drugs used: When using organic matter or other special reagents for experiments, the control of wind speed should be fully considered.
Heat source: When using equipment with a heat source, if the heat exceeds 2000 kcal/hour, the ventilation required to remove the heat should be considered to determine the power of the ventilator.
Experiments such as radioactive substances or perchloric acid: A dedicated fume hood should be selected, and the air inlet speed must be set greater than 0.5m/s.

Style and type of fume hood:
Style: Including standard, low-bench and floor-standing types, selected according to the specific situation and needs of the laboratory.
Type: Such as upper and lower split fume hoods, walk-in fume hoods, desktop fume hoods, etc., selected according to experimental needs.

Performance parameters of fume hoods:
Surface wind speed: must meet the safety wind speed requirements specified in international standards, that is, 0.5m/s, to ensure that harmful gases in the cabinet are effectively captured.
Opening height: Meet the needs of experimental operation space.
Ventilation control system: Choose a constant air volume, variable air volume or adaptive control system according to laboratory needs.

Material and structure:
Material: According to the material, it can be divided into plate fume hoods, PP fume hoods, all-steel fume hoods, stainless steel fume hoods, fiberglass fume hoods, etc. Choose materials with corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and other properties according to experimental needs.

Structure: There are guide plates, circuit control touch switches, power sockets, etc. in the upper cabinet. The material and design of the table should be easy to clean and prevent liquid leakage.

Environmental protection and energy efficiency:
Ensure that the harmful gases discharged are lower than the national environmental protection requirements. If they exceed the standards, corresponding purification devices should be installed.
Considering energy saving, air supply fume hoods should be used in rooms with heating or air conditioning, or fume hoods with air volume control should be selected.

Safety and humanized design:
The adjustable door of the fume hood should be made of safety laminated glass, and the design should be in line with human mechanics and easy for the operator to pull.
The table design should prevent liquid spillage and be easy to clean.
The base cabinet design should be sturdy and durable, resistant to erosion by acid and alkali environments, and easy to repair water,

electricity and gas systems.

Brand and supplier selection: Choose brands and suppliers with good reputation and experience to ensure the quality and after-sales service of the fume hoods.
